Livestock For Livelihoods (L4L) Project

Donor: UKAID through Farm Africa

Duration: 2018-2022

Introduction. Livestock for Livelihoods (L4L) is a four-year project (2018-2021) funded by UK Aid and delivered by Farm Africa (lead partner) and nutrition partners Africa Innovations Institute (AfrII) and Mothers and Children Multi-Sectoral Development Organization (MCMDO). It will be delivered in the Karamoja region of Uganda and South Omo region of Ethiopia. Both regions are largely populated with pastoralists or agro-pastoralists communities which Farm Africa’s scoping research shows experience high levels of poverty as a result of low productivity of livestock, weak livestock services, women’s low economic status and limited economic opportunities for women.

Women and children are particularly vulnerable and likely to experience chronic
malnutrition as a result of these factors as well as a lack of knowledge on dietary diversity and limited control over household assets. L4L seeks to tackle these problems and thereby reduce poverty and malnutrition (contributing to SDGs 1 and 2).

The overall planned outcome is for 21,000 households (10,500 in each region) to have increased income, reduced malnutrition amongst women and children, and increased access to livestock services. To achieve this overall outcome L4L will pursue 4 objectives:

1) Resilient pastoralist systems – 10,000 women livestock herders in pastoralist communities
increase production of goats and goat products.
2) Livestock service system – 21,000 pastoralists and agro-pastoralist access improved livestock and breeding services and veterinary drug supply

3) Market linkage and enterprise-10,000 women in pastoralist communities have improved
opportunities for livestock sale, income generation and values addition

4) Improved dietary diversity-10,000 households in pastoralist communities with improved
dietary diversity.
