Africa Innovations Institute (AfrII) seeks to recruit young and ambitious people to fill the positions of Socio-Economics Officer and Agricultural Technicians for the project “Organizing Fresh Cassava Root supply chain to meet the demand for two medium scale cassava processing industries: Windwood Millers Ltd (WWM) in Lira, and Adyaka Wholesalers Limited (AWL) in Apac” funded by Feed the Future Uganda Youth Leadership for AgricultureChemonics (YLA).

The Project is a partnership between the Africa Innovations Institute (AfrII), Chemonics (YLA), WindWood Millers Ltd (WWM), Adyaka Wholesalers limited (AWL) and Youth Farmers in the districts of Lira, Kole and Apac.

 

Position: Socio-Economics Officer

Location: Lira or Apac district

Duration: 12 Months

Person Specifications:

The suitable candidate should possess the following attributes:-

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Rural Economics, Development Economics and Agricultural Extension.
  • Certificate training in project planning and management, monitoring and evaluation, data management or other relevant fields.
  • Must be able to ride a motorcycle and must possess a valid riding permit.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Must have good communication and report writing skills.
  • Youth and preferably female youth are encouraged to apply.

 

Experience

  • At least three years of experience in a related field.
  • Experience in working with NGOs or development organizations will be an added advantage.

Duties and responsibilities:

General duties:

  • Supervise the project Agricultural Technicians who will be based at Windwood Millers Limited in Lira district and Adyaka Wholesalers Limited in Apac district.
  • Provide regular feedback to the project coordinator on progress and challenges the project is meeting.
  • Liaise with Windwood Millers Limited and Adyaka Wholesalers Limited to ensure project objectives are pursued and are being realized.
  • Work with the project Coordinator to prepare annual, quarterly and monthly work plans, budgets and targets.
  • Promote the public image of AfrII and the project.

 Technical:

  • Utilize MLE tools to track, measure and monitor progress towards meeting YLA project’s milestones indicators of the project.
  • Collate and provide information on planting materials, quantity of fresh cassava roots available, grits and flour to the two flash drying factories.
  • Work with the Agricultural Technicians and Group Based Facilitators to collect and present complete monthly data on a timely basis for validation and approval by MLE.
  • Accurately enter the approved data on a timely basis into the YLA Results Based Management System.
  • Identify and document successes, risks, threats, challenges, and opportunities in the course of project implementation and implement recommendations for remedial actions.
  • Work and cooperate closely with AfrII staff and WWM and AWL staff in implementing the project.
  • Undertake any other activities as may be assigned by the Coordinator, CM and the Chairman AfrII.

 

Position: Agricultural Technicians (2)

Location: Lira and Apac districts

Duration: 9 Months

Person specifications: 

The suitable candidate should possess the following attributes:-

  • Certificate in Agriculture but a diploma in agriculture is an added advantage.
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle and must possess a valid riding permit.
  • Fluency in the local language (LebLango) is a must.
  • Computer literacy is a must.
  • Ability to write good reports in English.
  • Good communication skills.

Experience

  • At least one year of experience in a related field.
  • Experience in working with NGOs or development organizations will be an added advantage.

Duties and responsibilities:

General duties:

  • Ensure effective implementation and achievement of project milestones and indicators.
  • Work with the Socio-economic Officer and project Coordinator to prepare annual, quarterly and monthly work plans, budgets and targets.
  • Provide regular feedback to the project Coordinator on progress and challenges the project is meeting.

 

Technical duties:

  • Identify youth farmer groups of youths aged 35 years and below, to be trained and contracted as commercial cassava growers to supply FCRs to the Adyaka Wholesalers Limited or Windwood Millers Limited flash drying factory in Apac.
  • Establish demonstration gardens with the youth groups for knowledge and skills development on good agricultural practices in cassava production.
  • Train youths and youth groups in good agronomic practices, agribusiness and other designated relevant skills.
  • Work with the Adyaka Wholesalers Limited or Windwood Millers Limited Factory Production Assistants to arrange deliveries of fresh cassava roots from the youth beneficiaries and commercial cassava farmers on an agreed supply schedule.
  • Routinely collect good quality reliable data using provided data collection tools to the project management.
  • Trouble shoot threats to youth groups’ cohesion and devise prompt conflict resolution strategies.
  • Work and cooperate closely with AfrII staff and Adyaka Wholesalers Limited or Windwood Millers Limited staff in implementing the project.
  • Any other business assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

 

Terms of engagement

The positions are 12 months for the Socio-Economics Officer and 9 months for the Agricultural Technicians with an attractive salary.
